Opportunities passed by, NO MORE

How many business opportunities can one person have before they make it big?

Well, ever since I was a kid, anything I made I tried to sell. I turned everything into a business. I have never been very good at mass marketing though.

Let me take you back to when I was 9 years old. I received my first “real” sewing machine. I started making doll clothes. They were pretty good too! The other girls in the neighborhood really liked them and wanted me to make some clothes for their dolls. My mom and my grandmother had given me a whole box full of scrap fabric. So I go started making a few dresses for dolls. I couldn’t just give away these dresses, after all this was fabric that I was given by my mom and grandmother. What should I do? Wait, I know, I’ll sell them to my friends. That way I could buy more fabric. I charged my friends a quarter for a dress. What a bargain! (But, let’s not forget, this was in 1958. Ouch that hurts!) Pretty soon, all the dolls in the neighborhood had a Karen designed moo moo for their doll. Boy oh boy, I was on my way to a lucrative future! Just barely 10 years old and I had money in the piggy bank!

Crafting was a huge part of my life. If I needed cash, I made stuff from A-Z, sold it at craft fairs and made it through the rough spots.

Let’s jump ahead 20 years. I had three daughters within a 4 year span and going through a divorce. What’s a single mom of three to do now? Let’s see, everyone loved my cooking and said I put on “one hell of a party”. Take it and run girl. Thus, Parties by Karen was born. It took me through the next several years. I only did parties on the weekends and was able to take care of my girls and feed and house them. Not bad.

Out of the blue came an old flame. After being a single mom for 6 years and a long distant romance for 2 of them, I married the guy and moved across the country.

Still turning everything into a business, here’s a short list of the businesses I started. All of them took us through a period of time. 1. Every craft I ever made. Sold them at every craft show that was within the distance of a tank of gas. (Paid for Christmas every year I did this.) Any time that I want to pick up a few bucks, this is where I get it from. 2. Started a tour company taking businesses by bus up to Central City for a day of casino gambling (that one was called “The Golden Stagecoach”) I think I gambled 25% of that profit every trip up the mountain! 3. Cooking seemed like a natural, so I became a Personal Chef. I didn’t really like hauling my wares to other people’s homes, so I decided to visit a few Daycare Centers with an idea. Offer your parents a real service. Order dinner for 1, 2, 3 days of the week, pick up the kids and dinner all in the same place. That was a sweet deal for them and me. I cooked twice a week for this service and they could get dinner every day of the week if they choose to. (most did the whole week) This one was called “Bellagourmet” 4. Sewing again helped with saving and making money over the years. I made all of the homecoming, prom and 1 of the wedding dresses for the girls. Then started a custom couture children’s clothing company called “Zooportnews” (Still have some customers from that company.) 5. My sister and I have another company called “The Siblings” and we have a secret project we are working on. This one could be big!! (too)

6. About 10 years ago I developed carpal tunnel syndrome. And out of this came my discovery of essential oils and what a difference they can make. My husband thought I should concentrate on our insurance business (we are licensed Insurance brokers) Not! I continued my studies and research and after spending all of his commissions, I think I now have a product for that business.

So, I know I can always take care of myself with what I have. But I want to really get to the top of the heap in something! Know what I mean?

I have decided to concentrate on one business and work it to the quick! My husband is in it with me up to his eyeballs. And we are going to make this work.

(besides, I can always make it through the rough times with crafts while I work on THE ONE!

By the way, if you need any recipes, patterns, craft tips, contact me. I know I can help!
